Constipation is a common issue during pregnancy, often due to hormonal changes and physical pressure from the growing baby.
Symptoms of Constipation
Hard, dry poo
Pain or discomfort when pooing
Pooing less often than usual
Cramp-like tummy pain
Bloating or farting
Poo that is unusually small or large
Causes
Hormonal changes: Slows down bowel movement
Pressure from the womb: Can affect the intestines
Not enough fibre or water
Iron supplements: Can cause constipation as a side effect
How to Relieve and Prevent Constipation
1. Hydration
Drink around 10 glasses (2.3 litres) of water daily
2. Fibre-rich Diet
Include foods like:
Wholegrains (breads, cereals, porridge)
Fruits and dried fruits (prunes, figs, etc.)
Vegetables
Beans and lentils
3. Stay Active
Gentle exercise helps keep bowels moving:
Walking
Swimming
Pregnancy yoga or Pilates
4. Toilet Habits
Go when you feel the urge – don’t delay
Take your time and stay relaxed
5. Toilet Positioning
Use a footstool under your feet
Lean forward (as much as your bump allows)
Elbows on knees, back straight
Breathe slowly and deeply – do not strain
6. Iron Supplements
Only take them if recommended by your GP or midwife
Speak to your Doctor, Midwife or Obstetrician if,
making diet and lifestyle changes does not work
you have blood in your stools (poo)
you have pains in your tummy
you are vomiting
They may prescribe a high fibre drink, or other types of laxative to help you poo.
