care of umbilical cordAfter your baby is born, the umbilical cord is clamped and cut close to the body in a painless procedure, leaving an umbilical stump.

Gradually, the stump will darken, shrivel up and fall off within a few weeks.
The only care the stump needs to be kept clean and dry.

To clean the cord stump use a soft cotton ball and clear water. Clean carefully underneath the cord clamp.

Fold your baby’s nappy below the stump, to ensure it is exposed to the air.

If you notice any redness or an unpleasant smell coming from the stump notify your doctor immediately.
