Itching is common in pregnancy. This is due to the increased blood supply to the skin and the stretching of the skin on the tummy. About 20% of pregnant women feel itchy during pregnancy. As your bump grows, the skin of your tummy (abdomen) is stretched more, and this may also feel itchy. If you have severe or persistent itching, contact your midwife or doctor as it could be a sign of a more serious problem.

Dealing with Mild Itching
Wearing loose clothes may help prevent itching, as your clothes are less likely to rub against your skin and cause irritation.
You may also want to avoid synthetic materials and opt for more natural ones, such as cotton.
Have a cool bath and apply calamine lotion or moistuiser to help soothe the itching.
Products with strong perfumes can irritate the skin, so try using unperfumed lotion or soap.

Severe itching
Itchy skin can be common during pregnancy. However, for some women it can be a sign of pregnancy cholestasis, which can be a serious condition that affects the liver. If you develop a troublesome body rash, always contact your midwife or doctor for advice.
