Mastitis is a tender hot swollen area of breast associated with a temperature, flu like aching and illness.

It is really important if you experience engorgement or mastitis or experience other breastfeeding challenges, that you receive immediate and good support when breastfeeding. In the case of mastitis it may also be necessary to visit your GP if you are feeling unwell or have a temperature. There is a wide range of breastfeeding support available in Ireland offered by public health nurses, voluntary groups and International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs). The breastfeeding supporter if necessary can help identify issues and make a plan with you to improve breastfeeding.
